Is Omnia instinct 2?

anyone know what carrier it'll be on?

Topics: instinct2, OMNIA

The look of the two phones is very similar but I wouldn't call it Instinct 2. The Omnia will be running Windows Mobile 6.1 so it is more of a Smartphone than the Instinct. Only Verizon has announced that they will be carrying it.

As beaker said, it looks similar, but definitely not the Instinct 2.  Samsung actually has a few other phones that that look identical.  The F490, Omnia, the upcoming AnyCall are all based on the same form factor but have different OS's and interfaces.  I believe the Instinct actually has the cheapest camera as the above have 5mp cameras as well as more advanced hardware across the board.

I guess that's what we get for $129... 2mp camera, cheap hardware and a no thrills OS.

Here's a pic of the F490 just to show you how identicle these phones actually are in design.

Notice the flash on the F490 :(

Still though, by the time the F490 gets to the states, we might have the htc touch hd.  Either way, we dont know who will carry these phones or how much they will cost.

The F490 is GSM so that leaves T Mobile and AT&T... an unlocked F490 is pretty pricey and if I was going to switch over to GSM, I would definitely go with the iPhone or the Android G1 (Dream) over the F490.  I love Samsung products, but I think they need to learn a thing or two from Apple and Google when it comes to apps and interface.

Unfortunately it's been reported that the Touch HD won't be coming to the States. I'm very sad about that. So much for hoping it would become the next Android phone. Well, your point still stands. By the time the Omnia reaches us, manufacturers would probably start coming out with better phones. The Omnia is a good step for Samsung, and they are part of the Open Handset Alliance with Android so they should be coming out with something really cool by next year.

Anyway, Omnia the Instinct 2? Nope. Omnia is what the Instinct should have been and what I expected it to be. Still, the Instinct is an affordable multimedia phone (or what geeks call a "dumbphone) while the Omnia is an actual smartphone which runs on WinMo. Personally I would get the Omnia if it came to Sprint. Supposedly it stacks up (not necessarily compete against) to the upcoming X1 from Sony and the iPhone.

Just in case anyone's thinking about getting a ported version though, just know that the FCC recently approved the Omnia for the US. So I guess we'll see it soon? Within a few months maybe?

Flashes on phones are near useless though, so it's nothing to be sad about. Actually, most cameras aren't even worth fretting over because phone cams have poor quality. The only US one I know personally that is passable is the LG Dare's. Other than that, there are phones coming that are made specifically to produce high quality (similar to a digital camera's) images.

Actually no. There's officially no hope for that because HTC themselves said by the time the US Touch HD is ported, it would be old news. I repeat, HTC themselves said that. But they did say they have cool stuff coming up, so I'm looking forward to those phones. Hopefully it's a more advanced Touch HD with a 3.5mm jack and then some. Like Android type and then some.
